So my 2008 mac book pro has decided that when you open the screen it wants to stay asleep. I've tried turning it off and on again but nothing seems to work. Any help would be great

Have you tried turning the lights on slowly?lol

With a PC you can normally wake it up by pressing the space bar or any key for that matter.

Does it 'bong' when you first boot it up? Just black screen of death?

I've had two logicboards fail on me with my 08 model

I just tried the lights but that didn't work. Lol

I get no bong or anything. The light on the release button still acts as if its still sleeping

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds exactly the same problem as I had with the logic board. Same as my gf's mac too actually, it's a common problem on these models. it may be something as simple as the sleep switch not working properly though.

If it is the logic board annoyingly it's one complete unit - with the first I had the graphics card went, the second something to do with power supply (part less than a year old too [:x])

If it is the graphics card that has failed on the logic board Apple were honouring free replacements so push hard for that as Nvidia pay for it. If it's not and they fob you off with some other excuse it's 420 for a replacement board [:v:]

Best bet is to take it to the 'genius' bar (groan) and get them to diagnose it properly.

Have you tried pressing and holding the power button to force a hard reboot? If you normally leave it in sleep, then eventually it might decide it needs a reboot. I normally reboot my machines every couple of weeks just to give them a refresh.

If you put your ear to the machine, can you hear the hard drive whirring? At 2008, it won't be a solid state one, so should be audible.

If it has a removable battery, try pulling that out as well.

It could be a board failure, or a hard drive failure. Hard drives often fail gradually unless the machine has got wet or had a shock. Normally the machine starts to get unreliable and crash a few times, then the boot sector gets corrupted and it won't boot up at all. You reinstall and it runs for a bit then fails again. The sudden motion sensors in the MacBook Pro normally protect a hard drive from damage if you drop it, or from jolts caused by walking around with the machine running, but a 5 year old hard drive can still fail.

Have you seen any 'grey screen' failures in the last month or so?

Mike, I've tried the hard reboot a few times now with no success. The battery is coming apart so I removed it a little while ago.
I can hear the hard drive spinning but it just won't wake up. This is the first time it's happened and I've no other issues with it.

Got a disc or a backup? Could be worth trying to boot from the DVD.

I just got off the phone with apple care support and it works again. I had to do another hard reset by holding:
the left Shift+Control+ALT+Power for 5 sec
Then turn it one by holding:
    Left Shift+ALT+Command+R+P+Power
It woke right up I just hope it continues to work properly now

    Thanks for everyones help

Well it happened again though this time nothing is working. So I've gotten all my files from the hard drive and I'll be getting a new macbook air in the next few weeks. I am kinda sad as I've had this macbook for 5 years now but it's dead
