I take it you are meaning resonated and non resonated, I had a cat back non res (louder) on my last Gti and was alright, it will be slightly louder than standard.

I now have a full BCS system with a down pipe and 200 cell motor sport cat, really well made system and the note is unreal and lovely note on shift with the Dsg. Would deffo recommend one of these as the make up of the system and customer care is top notch.

Checkout you tube for some vids or check the site www.powervalve.co.uk.

depends on the car how loud they are

mk4 r32 milltek non res is that not loud but the mk5 r32 with non res is ear splittingly loud

    decat makes them even louder

    plenty of video's on youtube

if it was me i'd get a resonated front pipe if it's not loud enough you'll get a second hand non res pipe for 70 to 85 quid on ebay or one of the forums

I'd love a bcs system but my pocket money won't let me but milltek and having the extra pipe is a good idea.i get the noise with my dsg on gear change and hoping to amplify it with new pipe:).

Definitely go for Non-Res, but in my opinion the BCS system is better and cheaper. I got the cat back for 525 delivered with a custom front silencer for a bit more noise.
