After having my passenger door in bits today I've found that the metal support bonded to my door glass is rotten. Looking for replacements I can't seem to work out what Tints the glass has, were they a standard tint or does it vary by manufacturer?. I have Uniglas units fitted, can't seem to find one to replace it with, seen a few Splintex ones though?. The car is a Mk2 GTI 16v, 1989 if it makes any difference. Looking at my glass, I can't see a green tint to it?.
Is it 14 in the schematic that's rotten? Could it be that the glass is a forced fit, held in by the grip of the rubber seal (13) and not permanently fixed. If it is the clamp and seal both look to be still available, might save you replacing glass and all? https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/golf/go/1991-110/8/837-160010/#13
Thanks for the idea. I've found a full kit on ebay, item 175829895121, 2 door lifters and 2 rubber seals. I thought the lifters were bonded to the glass, saved me a lot of hassle that that aren't!. Thanks again, much appreciated .
There can't be very much that's not being re-made for MK2's these days. Just need someone to start doing complete body shells, like they do with MGB's.
Looks clear to my eye but I found the way to tell is to wet the glass. I didnt realise my mk2 had a random green tint door glass fitted when everything else was clear, until it rained and the tint really showed! Replaced it now tho.
And a quick note - I found the clamp that is press fit to glass and a complete bastud to get off. Tried a few times to save the clamps from unwanted glass and after futile attempts at removing just put a hammer through the glass to get it off
I need to save the glass so I may end up cutting the old clamps off (looking at passenger side it's not far off disintegrating anyway!). When I was welding up my Mk2 I noticed a company made a complete floor tub, a lot of work to fit mind!.
yeah they're just press fit, carefully lever/tap off the old ones and swap another good nick one over. carefully squish the replacements on, no need to go too mad held in mainly with gravity and friction from the rubber
