Would a 40mm inlet manifold be too short to use on a Mk1 16v carb conversion? Or perhaps ideal for radiator clearance?

I'm not sure what the usual length of these manifolds are, unless someone may be able to shed some light...

What difference in performance is there from having a shorter or longer distance between the throttle butterfly and the valve? Is it a similar story to the length of stacks/trumpets that can be fitted, albeit before the butterfly, whereby more torque can be gained by using longer trumpets?
