OK the mk1s gearbox is going to have to go, crunching third and fourth, jumps out of second and the change is vaguer than a politicians promise.done the gearlinkage etc garage reckon the box has had it The grarage I use will replace for 120 labour plus vat but wont source boxes becaues they've had so much trouble with iffy units, particularly second hand, theyll fit it but i have to take the gamble with the unit which is fair enough Ive been quoted 500 plus vat (+ clutch bits) from a local transmission specialist for a pucker rebuild with 12 month unlimited mileage warranty drive in drive out, which is on a par with recon units ive seeen advertised by C&R or TSR (which does not include fitting). expensive but tempting for the long term peace of mind is there an alternative source of recon gearboxes worth having that will be less than that b is there a source of second hand gearboxes which arent luck of the draw? Not keen on having one fitted only to find its buggered too Will any 020 unit out of a mk2 gti fit in a mk1? how much should I pay for a second hand one any ideas where would you go for a gearbox? to be fair its worth getting one built up, now i know it a fck load of cash to splash out, but is worth the peice of mind you get with it. ask tubs what he did with his recent build, might save you a few bob.
Cheers will do although a friend of mine "in the trade" has found somewhere who will do a rebuild at a more reasonable price ( like half that much) rebuild is the way to go in the long term I think ( ready for more power )
