My girlfriend has a mk1 and a 1.6 gti is going in it, but the car has a 4 speed gearbox, she was told by someone that only a scirocco 5 speed box will fit ?? would be gladly appreciated if someone could help.

nah load of poo..... almost any 1.5 to 2.0 gearbox will fit, golfs sciroccos maestros caddys cabbys you name it so long as it is an 020 type. Be carefull which set of ratios it has so get the code from the bottom and compare before you buy one.

oh, also..... make sure the size of the output flanges is the same as the driveshaft inner CV joints, not essential as you can swap them to match but worth bearing in mind. 16v boxes have a bigger input shaft, just get a 16v clutch to match. Some early ones have a different reversing light switch (some have an economy meter on the dash) but you can modify the wiring to work with the normal setup.

I'm sure I've missed summat, anyone else?

I've had slightly different design in the linkages mounting on box, mounted in different position, Used the bit off replacement box, straight fit

    1.6 gets the fn(oldest),fd & 1 other from factory

    Gear Ratio chart 020

    good luck [:D]

    For a Mk1 1.3?

A Polo GT 'box would fit, you would need to fabricate a new mount for the rear of the 'box. A Formel E and 4+E 'box also fits but are hard to come by.
