The 1.8 Mk1 is the same engine as the Mk2 effectively. The earlier 1.6 is almost the same power. Insurance isn't just based on the engine. The mk1 is slightly quicker, harder to repair, easier to steal, more difficult to get parts for and worth more than a mk2. Hence more expensive to insure. Cheers, Drew.
I found that with Liverpool Victoria, a 1.6 MK1 GTI was only about 100 more to insure than my MK2 1.6 Driver!! Which worked out to be almost the same as what I was paying Directline to insure the MK2 Driver!! If only I had known before I bought the MK2 P.S. Dont get insured with Directline, they'll bend you over
Depends what you call pretty good condition? A mk2 for 800 will be in far better condition than a mk1 for 800 so its all relative. I paid 800 for mine which had a few faults to correct.
Yea, if I saw a MK1 with good (no rust) bodywork but with a fecked engine/running gear I would still call it good, as I'm pretty confident I can solve any mechanical problem, but bodywork isn't something I'm good at. While others might prefer a car that is in mechanicly tip top condition with body rot, because they know how to fix bodywork!
mk1 you can get classic insurance...worked for me but then older mk2s can scrape into classic insurance as well depending on the ins companies criteria...
