I was looking at the brakes on my citi (ie Mk1 Golf) today and want to use some of the upgrade parts I have knocking about, to improve them.

I have Golf 16v GTi calipers, carriers, bearing housings, hubs, black diamond grooved 256mm vented discs and EBC green stuff pads going begging for the fronts.

The question is - will they fit ok?

    are mk2 and mk1 hubs/carriers mutually interchangable?

Thanks dude.......I think peeps would have swapped to Mk2 hubs/bearing carriers if they could have.

I'll look for alternative 256mm caliper options.

The mk2 / 3 bearing carrier / upright change does involve a fair amount of re-engineering.
Also the front struts are a different size where they bolt to the upright.

Best to source either the Rocco 16v or Audi 256mm carriers and use the 256mm disc.

    Cheers Danster :)

I am looking into vauxhall (eek!) 256mm calipers - they bolt on with shoulder bolts / bolt sleeves and use stock 256mm vented VW discs I believe.

Yep that is another caliper option.
Some Astras or Cavaliers used a 256mm disc and their caliper carrier mountings match the mk1 bearing carrier / upright. Need a sleeve to reduce them from M12 to M10 bolts though.
The Vauxhall discs are slightly thicker than the 256mm VW ones, but only by a couple of mm. So you just have to be wary when the pads get near the end of their life.
The Vauxhall calipers use a banjo bolt on the brake flexi but sure the likes of HEL Performance on here could make up a suitable hose with the correct information.
I used the Vauxhall caliper myself in the past. The uprated pads were cheaper than the 256mm VW ones which was a bonus.

I have read that some older audi carriers will allow 16v Mk2 GTi calipers to bolt direct to Mk1 uprights along with 256mm vented discs.

    Audi 80 quattro (83 to 85)
    Audi 90 5-cylinder (85 to 87)
    Audi Coupe 5-cylinder (85 to 88)

    Part Numbers:
    Caliper carriers - 853 615 125
    Carrier bolts - N900 689 02
    Sliding pin bolts - 321 615 141

RJ - I've read conflicting information that these carriers will A) Work with Mk2 16v Calipers B) Need the twin pot calipers.

Do you happen to know which is the bluff?

    they A) work with mk2 16v calipers.

scirocco/audi 256mm calipers are identical to mk2 256mm calipers, except they use the early small bleed nipple. mk2 use the later large bleed nipple. pretty much any 256mm vented caliper you can find in the vw/seat range will fit fine. even polo gti items are same shape, though these use banjo fitment brake hoses

443615125A dropped and replaced with 443615125F these are an audi only part so not sure if they will fit? they seem to be fore same calipers as mk2 16v though, just a case are they going to fit your bearign carriers and are they the correct offset for a VW disc.

keep at it! you'll find some eventually. i found a set on ebay for a guy on the mk1 owners forums he only paid something like 40
