my H plate 16v gearbox has decided to throw its towel in, so im busy sourcing a new one. Im a little confused though, is it the same box as the 8v or the driver model? in the haynes i can only find two boxes, so surely they use the same one? [8(] i would think its better idea to buy a drivers one, because you just cant thrash a driver so the box should be in good nick...

    anyone got any ideas?

    cheers

The Valver uses a "2Y" coded gearbox, which has shorter ratios to make use of the Valvers inherent high up torque and power.

You can use an 8v box, but you'll need to change the clutch assembly. Same with the Driver box, but neither of them have ratios that suit the engine. Will make motorway journeys more civilised though.

I had a Valver box for sale 6 months ago and I couldn't give the thing away.

Probably hard to come by as the diff rivets tend to work loose and wreck the castings!

All the ratios are the same, except the 5th gear in the 8v is longer. Check your codes against the table at www.kraftswerk.com to be sure, to be sure. Oops, that was the leprechaun in me coming out again.....

Too long a fifth gear for your tuned motor? I had one on an old valver, thought it was a big improvement...

I think there are other differences to the 16v box. I believe the gear shaft design is different to the 8V.

It's a thicker mainshaft etc. as far as I remember - but does anyone ever break these on either box on a fairly std. engine? Be interested to know exactly what differences there are?

[:s] im confused, when i had the 8v box it went through the gears quickly and 5th didnt seem nowhere near long enough.gave fantastic acceleration but no top end.
now using a 4t caddy diesel box and the gearing feels longer.havent experienced a valver box,but thought they were also geared longer than 8v.
 do i sound stupid now

Was it a Gti box or a Driver one? I'm not sure of the box codes, but I was pretty sure the 8v had a longer 5th...

Just had a look - the Bentley has the ratios for the 2Y and 9A boxes as identical, except for the fifth gear which is longer in the 8v. I know the boxes I used were 2Y and 9A, suppose it depends on which box you got....

the 16v box has 1 extra spline on the out put.

I had a early MK2 8v GTI box on mine and likes the ratios.

Yup, the Mk1 box was a 4k code and is sought after because of it's quick acceleration - like you said though - bag of wank on the motorway!

Looking at the 8 and 16v today I could see that the output shafts in side the box were different in design although I will measure up the diameters to see whats what.
Diffs are the same, for both, so are the synchro mesh throughout the box, as are the gaskets and seals apart from the input bellhousing shaft seal, which is larger on the 16v due to the extra spline.
