mk2 8v heater

hi guys
my heater only works on setting 3 and is only warm when directed at the windscreen
elsewhere it is pretty cold
im sure there is a load of threads on here about this sort of problem but thought id ask
is there a simple fix or is it a more involved problem ?

Not too sure about the heat issue, but the motor only working on the third speed is fairly common.
Basically there is a thermal fuse on the motor that can blow and when it does this is what you get. I found a guide once to finding and replacing, I'll post it if I can find it. I bought a new fuse from Maplins, soldered it in, and all was good again. But be wary that there may be a good reason the fuse blew in the first place I.E a faulty motor and the fuse is there to protect the rest of the wiring etc, so only replace a like for like fuse or you could cause a fire. Failing that get another motor and that'll sort it.

andy does the resistor come with the motor
also do you know how old it is

yes the resistor comes with the motor (it slots into the motor housing)
came from my 1992 Jetta, works on all fan speeds and the fan spins nice and easy
