MK3 polo and Golf also have the right boxes too. basically mk2-3 Golf and mk2-3 polo 1.0-1.4 will definitely work.

some later polo boxes will work too but you have to be careful as some are based on big block engines so wont fit. basically if the engine you're looking at looks basically the same as yours then the box should go in fine

One thing to watch out for is the drive flange extension on the drivers side. The mk3 Golf boxes have it. I don't know if the mk2 does. The mk4 Polo boxes also have it. The parts are interchangeable so any of the 085 boxes can be made to fit.

Just had a look on Vagcat. Your 4 speed does have the drive extension.

ah so this is why the flange is different on the later MK3 Golf. the early MK3 has the same flanges as the MK2 Golf, and i assume this means you can simply swap mk2 flanges onto the later mk3/polo boxes?

There is a pressed steel seal extension housing that moves the seal away from the box by 14mm. It's the same size as the seal so either fit into the hole. The later boxes have a brass ring that seats in the side of the diff housing and supports the drive flange. This can't be fitted to the earlier boxes. The rest I just swap between them. My mk1 Golf has a mk4 Polo box and my son's mk3 Golf had a mk3 Polo box so I've done it both ways.

right so you yank out the flange, seal and seal holder, fit new seal to box and old flange, job done?
