    Hello.
The clutch pedal has always been very high on my mk2 gti 8v since I bought it. The previous owner said it had always been like it and he'd owned others the same. The thing is, when you press the pedal, the bite point is only a fraction under where the pedal normally rests. I haven't noticed it slipping at all. A local garage said the clutch was on its way out, so I thought I'd have a go at changing it myself. I've literally just ordered a new clutch and release bearing, but I've now discovered that this is quite common and the cable may just need adjusting.
From what I've said, does it sound like I need a new clutch or just some adjustment?
    Many thanks.

If you don't know when the clutch was last changed then I'd change it anyway! Have a look what cable you have those self adjusting ones can make it seem high sometimes!

Yes, good point. I don't know when or if it has been changed, so I can't lose anything. I will check the cable too. Cheers!

Yep I had exactly this problem when I first drove my car. The garage also said I needed a new clutch...

I swapped the self adjusting cable for a manual adjusting cable, the clutch lasted 6 years!! including a trip to the 'Ring!
I've only recently replaced the clutch just for peace of mind with doing more track days :)

well worth a cable for a few quid :)

is the clutch pedal higher than the brake pedal? if so you have lost the limit stop. for manual cable adjustment pop the bonnet and lift the cable straight up at the box, you want about 10mm of free play :)

While your gearbox is out its a good idea to check
Shaft seals and change them if they look duff.for a
Tenner I'd change them anyway to avoid doing It
    Twice(like I did).:o
A couple of oil drips onto your new friction plate
    Will ruin it!

John, thanks for reply. Yes the clutch pedal is a lot higher than the brake pedal but you only have to press it down a fraction to lose the biting point. If I press it down to the level of the brake pedal, I can go through all the gears smoothly.

Mk2 nas, Thanks for the suggestion about the shaft seals. I will check them over.

Can you reset an auto adjust cable? Looking at a MK2 over here with a dicky clutch and I'm near certain that the cable is to blame (as per) but getting parts for old Golfs in NZ isn't the easiest or cheapest task

can try squashing it down and using the white clip to reset, but sometimes that doesnt help. I've seen guys split the auto adjuster down to sort it but I would just get one from VW heritage they have no trouble shipping to aussieland so shouldnt be a problem to kiwiland ;)

Jolfa, they are evil and the manual cable is the way to go.. fro m memory you twist it like a bayonnet to rundo it, but if youve ever looked inside one, youll see a mad scientist's idea of re inventing a nut and thread .. you will toss it and keep it simple.

its clipped to the pedal box, near the top where the clutch pedal hits it. once you have the stop it becomes obvious how it fits when you're looking at it :)

    Thanks RJ once again,

I can't see a thing! Someone's put a bloody steering column in the way! Gutted as I wanted to make sure I had the clip or not visually. I'll keep looking, found an exploded diagram too but like I say the steering column tube is blocking my view?

    Cheers again, harryvr6

if you take the dash tray out you should be able to get a reasonable view of the clutch pedal, have a feel up top where it touches the pedal box when fully up. if theres nothing plastic in between yep the stop has fallen off :)
