Hey Whats the difference in weight and size on a mk2 golf and a mk2 ibiza 16v? What floor plan in the ibiza based on is it the polo (I think i remember Rob mention it was) How do the two compare Cheers Craig
The ibiza is a fair bit more modern than the golf. The Polo floorplan is more or less the same. There is a weak point where the pedal box attaches to the floor plan and sometimes it needs welding. Also they suffer a bit from a bit of rust as well on the rear arches and in the rear passenger footwells. No idea on the weights im afraid.
I have both of these,i quite like the Ibiza, its a mk3 golf front with a polo rear. shorter wheel base than a mk2 golf and less room inside. The heavy front and narrow rear make the back end a little twitchy but they handle ok. Mines off the road atm and i have the option of tracking it,breaking it or putting some tax & an MOT on it. I'm going for the latter as mechanicly its sound as and like i say i quite like it,even though like also said rust is a problem. Its NO mk2 golf though, but they are a very good donor for them.
my housemate had the mk2 ibiza cupra with an ABF in it. I hated it, poor build quality, didn't feel as quick as a mk3 valver and handled like pooop. Get a mk2 and stick an ABF in it all day long
Had and Ibiza cupra 16v then a mk2 16 valve and now have a Ibiza 16V which should give you my opinion. Rear twitchyness can be solved with 10mm spacers each side to even out the track. Not as cool as amk2 admittedly but being fairly unknown can catch out people at thelights which make them more fun in my eyes. Mine will be up for sale soon as going S3
go with the real thing, the golf, dont mess with second best, and red is definately quick but not as quick as green because they use natural pigment in the paint making it lighter.
My ABF engined Cordy SX was like **** off a shovel. Far better built than any Mk2 Golf too, but you should be comparing the Ibiza/Cordy with the Mk3 Golf really.
I prefer the Ibiza over the mk2 (which is probably going to get me killed!) but like has been previously said, they have their weaknesses. You want 20mm spacers on the rear (each side) as well to really sort it. Problem can be with available parts and knowledge on them, somewhat limited compared to Mk2's in the track/modified area. All part of the fun though. Also worth noting is the choice of sunroof and aircon or half leather and cloth options. The latter is called a Cupra but you probably already knew that. Optional upgrades included recaro seats which were lovely!
If you want to see how badly Ibizas rot just look at the one in my members gallery thread (engine donor). As has already been said the build quality is ****e although it was a fun car to drive in the short time I had it (bar the bloody awful cable gear change setup). Whilst mine was a complete dog and fit for it's purpose of donor it should be noted there are at least 3 very sorted Ibizas on here that would send many a mk2 Golf away crying
I've had 5 ibizas None of them have been rotton. Its just a 6n polo shell & dash with mk3 engine & subframe Regarding weight, my current one is 1043kg with back seats out
