Hi guys, recently got myself a golf. Mines the 1.8 golf GL 1989 4+E

Any idea what kind of BHP this thing is laying down? And other specs?

How would it fair against same litre engined cars about today? I see some of you are running modded engines!

Anything I should do to pep mine up a bit?

    thanks!

That should be a 90bhp GU coded engine (check your V5) / 108lb/ft torque.

It will respond to a Mk2 PB-engined 8v GTI hydraulic cam, and coupled with a GTI 8v gearbox, minus the +E gear, you'll really notice the improvement

Hm, V5 says nothing about power, its blank. I'm guessing its the 8 valve version because its only 90bhp? So in todays cars, its about the same as a 1.4L?

    Cheers.

The V5 should give the engine code. It should be prefixed with 2 letters...

it is GU indeed! Nice one thanks.

Also just remembered, the old gearbox was swapped out. Not sure what was put in there to replace it though. Basically what does the 4+E mean? Mine has just 5 standard gears as far as i can tell.

The E gear is a lazy cruising gear for low revs on the motorway, with a gap to 4th. The GTIs had a normal 5th.

Check the gearbox code on the very bottom of the bell housing and it'll be possible to tell what's in it already.

GTi cam it, she'll hold her own with most average motors on the roads, I had the same engine and it was perfectly competitive most of the time.

So, with the E gear you can cruise at about 70-80 without 3-3500 rpm?

Is it additional to 5th or does it replace it? [:[]

Doing that speed every day to college could save me !

    But back to subject;

PB GTI cam as mentioned before...
follow the dyno tested airbox mods on a thread on here somewhere, I will be after winter.
Try and clean everything up as best you can?

(the gti cam wont make the engine equal to gti as they have bigger valves and I think other things too, maybe intake manifold and ECU mapping?)
