Guys, Long story short, I seized my 8v daily the other day. I've got a complete AHU swap sat in my garage (for another project) but i sold the AAZ gearbox. I've looked into ratios the the standard GTi box (020) and it'll give me roughly 3000rpm @ 70mph - does this seem right? Thanks!
My jetta TD running the original box with the engine does 3000rpm doing 70.. its not the best but I will be swapping it over to an 02a before long..
Mk2 Golf GTD runs a "4T" code box and im pretty sure its the same ratios as a number of non gti petrol models (1.6 ect) my GTD is not far off 3000rpm @ 70mph. Run 15" wheels with 195/45/15tyres. (speedo is over reading actualy so probably is 3000rpm at 70)
4T gearbox's can be found on 1.6/1.8 carbs And the GTD i think the input shaft splines on the 1.6 engine gearboxes is different due to being a 200mm clutch not 210 like all the others. 1.8 and specifically the GTD have 210mm clutches and 4T gearboxes wouldn't bother with a 200mm clutch on a TDI. could pick a box from a 1.9D engine? (1y) sure they would work just fine and they are pretty plenty-full at a scrapyard thanks to them rusty MK3s
All MK2 8V boxes have the 24 spline input shaft (also the 210mm clutch models), and only the GTi 16V has the 28 spline 210mm clutch/input shaft (2Y gearbox) IIRC. Seeing that you have a MK2 GTI you probably also have 100mm axles, so you want to look at a box with 100mm flanges. Alternatives are: 020 AON: 3.455 1.944 1.370 1.032 0.745 with 3.67FD The following 020 boxes: ATH 3.455 1.944 1.286 0.909 0.745 with 3.67FD CJC " CDJ " CHD " DFP " All 100mm flanges. You could get a longer 5th and FD ratio in a 02a box though. You will have to convert to cable shifting for that. Good luck
