    Hey guys.

So I’m ditching the original 8v rad and fan setup for a slim line fan to go in its place, mainly due to space issues and using a K04 style inlet.

How hard will this be to wire up properly ?
I’ve never messed with the fan’s wiring before, so any help or how-to’s would be much appreciated.

Mk2 is a late J plate 1.8 Driver if that makes any difference.

    Cheers. [8D]

    Thanks for the reply RJ.

My Mk2 has a 3 pin plug on it though ? The new fan has two wires.

One is low speed, one is high speed, one is ground.
You'll want ground and low speed. Which is triggered at a cooler temp

Or else get the rad wiring loom and rad temp sensor from a Non GTI.

Thanks for that Tristan. I had a feeling it was to do with the high and low speed. Any reason why you’d want it to trigger a lower temps ?
Looking at the fusebox FAQ, I can’t seem to find which colour wire would be the low speed option ?

Also, mine isn’t a GTI. It’s a 1.8 Driver, but I’ve got a feeling they share the same setup.

Red/white is first speed, which is the one you want. Red/black is speed 2 which normally would never be triggered if the coolant system is healthy

To expand on RJs post, the 2nd speed in for stuff like towing, high ambient temps and climbing hills etc.

Checked this on car(G plate PB) and linking between the 3 wires can get both speeds, however only have 2 connections on thermo switch on rad, so can only get slow speed. Is it important to have both fan speeds on gti? Is there a difference in temp making the fan come on. Switch must have been changed at some point but not by me

I've never had speed 2 trigger on mine in near 20 years of driving so I wouldn't rush out to fix it, next time you have coolant system open maybe have a 3 pin switch ready to pop in

the 2 pin switch kicks in same temp as 1st speed on the 3 pin so no worries on that front

Same as John. Even track use, don't think I've ever seen high speed.
Mk2 8v has a very good coolant system

Thanks guys. The fan is now here ready to be wired in today, along with a new rad temp sensor so fingers crossed it’ll all work as it should. [8D]
