Hi As a very newby to the GTI world, (just bought an N plate 8V) I wanted to know if there were any checks I could make to ensure the dealer I bought it off really did Service my car before I picked it up. (THey said they did, but I want to be 200% sure as its just reached 80K)... the in 02 service light still comes on each time I start her up... The car runs great, but I just want to set my mind at rest...
If they have really just done the 80k service, then the giveaway should be new spark plugs and air cleaner. These are listed as a change item at every 40k on the latest VW service list. The current standard price for a 40k service is 253. The list is: Engine Oil change Engine Filter change Timing Belt check V-belt/Ribbed Belt check Spark Plugs replace Air Cleaner replace filter W/W Fluid check level Auto-shift Lock check operation Brake System check damage/leaks, pad thickness, fluid level Wheels rotate front to rear Airbag System check function/damage* Battery check electrolyte level Engine check for leaks Pollen Filter replace Cooling System check level Transmission check for leaks** Tires/Spare check condition Driveshaft check boots OBD check DTC memory Door Hinge lube Headlights check and adjust if necessary Exhaust System check for damage and leaks Sunroof Frame clean and lubricate Road Test Power Steering check fluid level Brake Fluid*** Check ATF and Differential for leaks and level; add if necessary Front Axle check dust seals, ball joints, tie rods Simon
Thanks Simon, I'll check out the Air filter and plugs asap. P.s. Is that the current main dealer price?
The other important item to check is to see if the Timing Belt was changed at the "recommended" 60,000 miles. I'd assumed with mine, as it had a fVWsh, that this would have been done but when I checked with the servicing dealer they told me the the owner had declined to have it done!
Very good point. The original service book was lost, but there is an official VAG replacement.... so I'll check that and contact the main dealer.
give the dealer the regestration number at the service desk and they should be able to tell you everything.
and it wouldnt of been serviced at a vw dealer if the light is flashing 02, 01 is a lube service and if i remember 02 is a 20k, not 100% sure i will try and find out in work tomorow as well as how to reset you service light.
It says in the manual how to reset it yourself. And a dealer can only give you history of the car if the work has been done there. Other work could have been done elsewhere that they don't know about.
Ta very much. I've got the number of the dealer, so I'll give them a ring. I checked the filter and plugs, oil etc yesterday, and they all look new (THere's a new oil filter there too) which shows its had at least a basic service, but probably not the full one. I'll probably leave it a 1000 miles or so, fit a K&N, let that settle in then take it to a V-dub specialist for a complete 20K love-up! As for the 02 flashing up, I'm not sure if they knew how to do that, but yes, its in the haynes manual. Thanks for your help.
Swax, 1. 253 is the price for a 40k service that I have been quoted by four main dealers. Give or take a couple of quid. 2. VW have changed all the service intervals from what was printed in the original Mk3 manual, and what has been copied my Haynes. The original concept was: 10,000 miles (OEL) Oil change and front brake inspection 12 months (IN01) Basic service 20,000 miles (IN02) Extended service But this has all changed. The current policy is: Annual service (12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first): Oil change, filter change, basic inspection (cost 155) 20,000 miles: as for 10k, plus much more detailed inspection, lubricate a few bits, align headlamps (cost 195) 40,000 miles: as for 20k, plus really detailed inspection, inspect cambelt, change plugs, air filter. (cost 245) 60,000 miles: whatever is the appropriate service, plus cambelt. 2 years, change brake fluid, blue coolant (G11) 3. As long as you are talking a panel filter, then I have no comment, but stay away from cone filters. Simon.
i agree, my experiences with my local main dealer have been very dire (apart from the parts desk, which are always helpful). there's no way i'm ever taking my car to the main dealer again, they are UTTER USELESS fatherless childs and they only care about NEW CARS that THEY HAVE SOLD. i use an independant specialist now. /edit sorry about that rant, just slightly off topic but had to get that out Edited by: b'locks
I've managed to get it in for a full service, oil, brake fluid, air, oil filters, plugs, lube and timing (cambelt) belt for 275 quid. Alot, but at least it'll give me peace of mind and worry free motoring for another year...... Thanks for your advice!
