ok i been told that i need to remove front engine mount to get to the old sensor?? where is it situated on an ABF mk3? not too clued up on engine bits so not sure what to look out for, someone said its held on by 3bolts so just look out for somethin on that?
mate you can do it without removeing anything but it is extremely fiddly. done mine this way and the hardest thing was getting it back because it's behind the oil filter so you could do an oil + filter change at the same time to make it easier. hth alcamistdvd
thanks!iv actually got new oil filter too so can do both at once. havent got the new sensor yet, picking it up 2mro. how big is the sensor and how is it put in? think i may need to dig out the haynes
I've had to do this twqo times in as many weeks... Pretty easy and shoudl take no more than an hour... Your need... 16mm,17mm sockets, 13mm small spanner/10mm small spanner/ ratchet and a 5" extension & a couple of Allen keys. Basically undo the front engine mount top bolt and the gearbox mount top bolt and the lower front mount (Alen key but can't remember what size) Undo the metal water hose to front mount with the 10mm spanner Dis****ect the reverse light switch and the single connector on the plastict mount imediately to the left. Remove the plastic loom holder to gain access to the top starter motor bolt (top engine bracket bolt). Undo the 13mm nut using a smal spanner and then loosen the top rear starter bolt. Loosen the front upper starter bolt. Remove your front valance and get under the car. Support the gearbox casing on a trolley jack. Undo the front power steering hose support 13mm nut (some of these bolt directly to the gearrbox rather than mounted on a starter bolt so if this is the case you wont need to do this step. Next loosen the front lower start bolt and raise the jack until the front engine mount bracket lifts off the front mount. You can now remove the three loosened starter bolts which will 'free' the front bracket. You now have a couple of options on how to lift out the bracket. It can be lifted straight up with a bit of faffing or you can twist it and move out under the rad fan motor. In either case its a bit footery. Once its out remove the front mount which makes acces to G28 that little bit easier. Remove it with a 4mm Allen key and make a note of how the cable is routed. Pop in the new one (please remember to fit an O ring to the new sensor ) reroute the cable and reassemble. Hope this helps a bit.
sounds more complicating now lol il need to print this out now cheers. where bouts are you? fancy doing it all again haha
Its not that hard very simple on the ABF. Simply take out the top bolt from the front engine mount. Take out the bolts from the starter, you can leave the starter in. Jack up the engine from the sump or bell housing and take off the front engine bracket. You should be able to see the crank sensor remove the small allen bolt and remove sensor.
Icy, Have you checked the engine speed in the instrument cluster test while the starter is turning the engine? I've always thought this was shown using the crank sensor.
no i never dougie. all sorted now tho BIG THANKS to G60DUB for coming thru today and fit my new crank/speed sensor.
I know this is a long time past, but does anyone have a decent picture of the LOCATION of the crank sensor? It's bloody freezing here, and i dont relish going out in the snow!!
It's tucked in the bottom corer of the block at the back of the cylinder block.(Clutch/flywheel side).
http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=180736 have a look in there (i cant see the pics at work) there are pics of a bare abf block and youll see where it lives from there
