do a search for 'EZ shim' dirt cheap and very adjustible for both camber and toe. need to know what the camber and toe is before you start though so you can adjust it

You asked what the advantages and disadvantages were.

Answer: for a road car, no performance advantage, merely done for appearance. Downside is tyre wear, and unpredictable alteration of rear grip in marginal conditions.

depends how far you go, and if you're adjusting for looks or to correct incorrect rear camber/toe

The rear camber is approx -1.5 deg on a GTi MK3 from the factory. More than this and you are likely to promote accelerated inside tyre wear as already suggested by Chris.
