Came across a 1997 P reg 5dr mk3 16v in red for sale just round the corner from me.

looks in good nick, the only problem I see is it being red and 5dr.

What's a rough value on it? I'll find out the mileage, MOT, tax etc.

    It's up for 600, worth a punt?

If it's the 16v I'll probably have it, a bit more refined to my mk2

yeah, well worth it for 600. just hope its not totally rotten. not a lot to go wrong, nothing is hard to fix. 5dr is pretty bad, but for 600 (and you might knock some off) itll rock

Turns out it's the 2.0 8v GTi, it has 180k but quit a bit of service history. Full electric pack (prob standard on GTI)

    DTM style upswept exhaust.

Worth a punt if it drives well?

Apparently it's just started to misfire occasionally? Gotta be something simple surely.

    So.....

5dr mk3 in red, 180k with slight misfire.. Value???

According to the handy Parker's guide I've got sat on my computer desk, around 300 is about right. I know Parker's guide's shouldn't be relied upon that much though.

^^ either clocked or a sheeter!!! An ok condition vr6 with a genuine 76k miles is worth nearer 2k. Either you got the bargain of the year or it's not as it seems
