I attempted to change my fuel filter today which should have been a simple procedure except that I couldn't disconnect the fuel lines from each side of the filter. The Haynes Manual says that you need to squeeze them with your fingers as they are "quick release" ones. But I can't seem to do it. Lack of access under the car doesn't help. I also don't want to force them with pliers.

Is it a case of being persistent? Or am I missing a trick? I really can't figure out where to "squeeze"?
