Not quite sure what it is, and I'm too lazy to investigate properly - My Mondeo shakes badly above 30mph, only when the engine is under load (goes completely as soon as I let off or put the clutch in) and in any gear. Brief investigation tells me it's not a wheel bearing or an engine mount, this is as far as I got, I've had enough of cars for today I couldn't much be arsed Any ideas? I'm thinking inner CV maybe?
Nobody? Discovered today it's bad between 30-60, not too bad 60-90, then it's like a shonky old tumble dryer after that, it's horrendous! ...Maybe I should have a proper look at it []
I like you style! I did think clutch but I didn't think it'd be very likely? Anyway, it's getting worse you can now feel/hear a thud, thud, thud when under load, and it's a little worse when going round left handers with any kind of pace...
It'll be the LH inner c.v. joint jolfa, done untold number of them, the needle roller bearings wear and it cause excess play which is felt as a vibration under load, just done one last week and the week before. Seems to be a ford thing as it happens on the focus and transit connect as well, hope this helps
TBH it's gonna be trial and error as it's very hard to find which side it is for sure, unless it's really worn and it knocks and has lots of free play when you turn it by hand with the wheel in the air. Not too bad to change, undo the big hub nut, take out the ball joint pinch bolt and lever the lower arm out then the most difficult bit which is to lever the shaft out of the diff - normally a big lever bar does the trick - then it's out. As for cost, unipart who we use a lot, charge around 130 for the complete shaft, you can't just change the inner joint i'm afraid.
Oh balls I can't afford that! Hopefully the scrappy will have one... It's getting pretty bad pretty quick, it knocks very badly under load now so it shouldn't be too hard to establish which one it is! Cheers for the help, will report back when I either fix it or it disintegrates and I'm left stranded somewhere []
Do you know if I can use a shaft off any engine/model or does it have to be the 2.5 V6 MK2 manual shaft?
V6 is different to a 4 cyl. i'm sure, if your car has abs make sure the car you get it from has as well. In a wierd way it's probably a good thing it's that bad, as it'll make it easier to diagnose which side has gone.
I had it in the air earlier, o/s shaft has massive amounts of play in it! Few on eBay anyway for around 30, cheers amigo
10 points to d_white2! 2 out of 3 of them were smashed to pieces! I lost all drive due to this last night, fortunately I was only round the corner from home at the time! Can you not just get these bearings seperately? Surely that's all I need..?
