So the crank is out and here's No 3 (Middle) bearing cap and the lower bearing from No2 piston, all the caps and lower / upper bearing as the same. As per my note earlier on would welcome comments on the condition of these bearing and weather to replace? Nut 20v thanks for the recommend!
The main bearing looks all ok. The big end one is a bit scored, but nothing too hellish. I would price up a set of new bearings and see how much a local shop would charge for a re-grind before making the call.
I reckon they're ok for a road car. Check with plastigauge though. If you're going to batter it on track then maybe look at replacing. How are the crank journals. Can you catch a fingernail on them?
Had the AGG done many miles? im always surprised when i get a engine at how little wear and tear there is, yet people still nearly always feel the need to rip a low mile engine apart!! having said that my 23k mile AGG was ripped apart, but i did fit a diesel crank.
Got it from Stevens, best they could say was "smoke free around 100k" as you can see nothing to worry about, normal wear and tear in the bottom end.
So guys I'm ready to go now and start the rebuild, where's the best place to go to get the necessary parts of the AGG bottom end (rings, bearings, gaskets, seals etc)??
When I was looking for these I found stock at a local German & Swedish outlet but, in the end I got them off my mate at the machine shop, just to totally ensure the bearings etc fitted as he did the work.
Given the vagueness of the description, maybe it does need a freshen up. How were the bores - any sort of lip in the top, or can you still see the honing marks on them?
Am working on the basis of it seems false economy having done all this work and not replace these parts, bores are clean and smooth the touch, no visible marking or lips at the top or bottom of the stroke, not sure what I'm looking for in terms of honing marks to be honest. Would prefer to replace and properly "run in" as a new engine. From various sources have identified these parts / part numbers; Oil Pump 027115105B Piston Ring Set 053198151C Bearing Shells (Piston) 034105701 Thrust Washers 026198421 Crankshaft Bearing 068198497 Sump Gasket N 0138492 Gasket 026103161B Gasket 026103181B Oil Seal 068103085E J
You can still just see some of the factory hone marks in that shot at the top of the bore. If you have the rings off the piston you could pop one in at the bottom of the bore and measure the ring gap, and then do the same 10cm down from the top to see how the bore has worn. Use a piston without any rings in it to ensure you have the rings square in the bore. But if you are really keen to freshen up the unit before you fit it you could do a lot worse than pop in to have a chat with a local machine shop and see what he says about giving it a re-hone. You can buy the kit to do this at home but it is easy to do to balls it up if you are not spot on and from experience a shop dose not charge much for this sort of work.
OK am ordering parts . . . . should I replace the piston connecting rod bolts and / or the crank bearing cap bolts??
Looking good. Now remember to take your brave pills first Hard to see from the pic, but what machineing work did you go for?
