im totally baffled and cant find what or where its came from

its in my 91 16v and the code on the bottom of the bellhousing is

    6W20084

    i've checked on here,
    VW boxes
and it dont exist as a VW box

any other makes of cars that ran the same gearboxes?

    Cheers,
    Craig

Sure there's not anymore codes on it? Mine's a DFQ out of a mk3 8v/Seat Ibiza GTI

16v size input shaft and output flanges.

on the little cover plate on the 5th gear end has it got a big VW or
does it have a shallow cone shaped pressing there instead? (the bit
that is green for the first 5 years of its life then rusts)

it just occurred to me that the maestros I've had didnt have VW on
the end caps just the cone shape, might explain a bit more of the
puzzle... (might not though ;) )

well thanx to the maestro & montego forum, it turns out that i have a 1600 5 speed maestro non-mg gearbox in my 16v

    its ratios are

    1st 3.45
    2nd 1.94
    3rd 1.29
    4th 0.91
    5th 0.71

    Final Drive
    3.94:1

so comparing this against a std 16v (or 8v) box, am i losing out in much?

all these ratio's dont make much sense to me!!

    Cheers,
    Craig

You'll be losing a bit of acceleration with those ratios, but have a quieter motorway drive.....

Actually, you might not - just looked at the final drive figure. If I could be arsed to work it out I would, but as there's a calculator on the link you posted, I won't bother.... ;)

70mph works out at 3k rpm on my current box, and 3.5k rpm on a std 16v box in 5th

Better for cruising then. Check the rest of the gears too, to see how the acceleration compares....

    1st & 2nd seem quite similar

then from 3rd,4th onwards the 16v faster

dunno if im reading it right or not, only thing is the box aint close ratio so i need to ring the neck out of it in each gear

i presume one of the previous owners of my car must have knew something about them to pick that gearbox for it
