need help with layers

just a quickie - I am trying to create an image which is black and white but has a layer over the top in colour.

I have done this before but for some reason am struggling today. When I select the layer I want in greyscale it does all the layers and I can't get it to just edit that layer?? How do I do that?

it's ok I have done it via editing the hue/saturation, now it won't let me go back and edit text grrrrrr

CTRL+ SHIFT+U
will desaturate an image, just for the future

 

You mean something like this?...



Cut around the subject > make selection > CTRL+J (new layer from cut)

Select background layer > Layers > adjust > desaturate.

CTRL+E to flatten layers > Done...

 

yeah have done it before - but i think before I did it that way but thought it was possible to change the 'mode' which effects everything your doing. done it now.
