    Hi,

I've just bought a non running mk3 Golf GTi. It's had a new ignition barrel and whilst hunting around for a non-start issue - fires up for a second and shuts off - i've looked at the keys and they are just basic keys. Can't split them open so I am guessing there is not an immobiliser in there.

How do I sort this out? I'm guessing the keys were lost as the car is missing it's door lock barrel and came with 2 x bare replacement barrel (I've got some tumblers here from another project).

I would like to have some security and like the idea of an immobilisor so how would I code in the keys to the immobilisor. I've got VCDS lite and an OBD Elevan that can do coding adaptions. I assume my issue is the ignition barrel is for a car with an immobilisor.

Here's some pics with what I've got in the car.

There are immo defeat chips that I've used on mk2 caddy, same immobiliser as mk3, I opened the immobiliser unit box up and soldered it inside instead of original circuit board, plugged in and looked standard.
But obviously not working immobiliser then, so presume you need the key coding to your car, which I'm not so sure of, sorry not a great help. [:-B]

Thanks dodgy, still useful! I'm learning about what my options might be at the moment.

1 option is to delete it i guess. The other i am thinking about is sourcing keys, ignition barrel and immobilisor (and retumbling my locks) from a breaker but then how do i know the igntion barrel is going to be any good and might be in the same situation. Or is it the switch that goes rather than ign barrel?

Is it possible to get a spare transponder key and code it to the existing immobilisor? Presumably I need to the ignition barrel for the key to work then though.

I'm happy to junk the ignition barrel i have as the keys are non VW and don't fit the empty VW replacement barrels (only insert 3/4 of the way)

Suppose you would need to get on contact with a specialist breaker, finding complete set in a yard, with key must be quite hard nowadays.
Think we had full set of barrels for the mk2 and it included the ignition, but not searched mk3, and trouble with later ones must be having immobiliser too.
There was a guy breaking a mk3 estate in Sheffield the other day, I may have his number somewhere, I got some bits off him posted to me, but I'm unsure if he is still breaking or has any parts left.

Cheers! I'm getting somewhere now i think

This chap sells a chip to remove the immobiliser https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ABF-ECU-Immobiliser-Delete-defeat-Mk3-VW-Golf-gti-16v-Seat-deimmobilised/324116137514?hash=item4b76d3c62a:g:tcsAAOSwn6RbpScI

I think that's the route i'll go down and get an aftermarket modern alarm fitted.

Then I've got an issue with my generic non VW keys - i don't like them and they don't fit in VW barrels - so i'm going to source a steering column with igniton barrel and hopefully some matching locks but I have some tumbles here to re-jig the ones I've got! I might try a file on the edges of my keys first though - they're too wide at the base to fit in the barrels.

Jeez, definitely didn't cost that much for my delete,
    I used one of these...

You take the immo box out under dash, two plugs, open it up, solder the board in place of original and reassemble. No touching the ecu at all.
Think I may have paid less than that, possibly got one in my box still.
Search immobiliser emulator, about 7.50 on Ebay

if you can get any 96-98 mk3/polo/etc immo box and chip swap that over and use vagcom to code it. dont need to swap ignition lock again, either tape chip to reader coil or get a new mk3 chip blank key cut to your locks. can also send ecu off to have it defeated or use one o those bypass boards
