    On a friend's recommendation, I bought a 'fast' F1.8 50mm Nikon lens.

Too cold to venture outside much, but took this pic of the canine dustbin inside the house at 4pm when the light was going, handheld at 1/6sec F2.8. It could have been sharper, but the dog wouldn't lie still, kept creeping up to sniff the camera! Next time I'll nail his ears to the floor! ;)

It bodes well for taking stuff in low light and was a good price at 73 delivered.

It's also, apparently, a good portrait lens, as on my D70 it's the equivalent of a 75mm lens.

tis all to do with the nice big aperture (low f number) giving a very small depth of field.

yep yep... my standard lens is pants for it, realistically 5 is the lowest it goes unless you want no zoom at all. Spent ages trying to copy a photoshop tutorial on how to ad out of focus to pictures and got so annoyed with it figured be easier to save up for a quicker lens!!!!

was that an ebay purchase then stella??

Details are here but it seems to have increased in price since I ordered mine with some Christmas moeny. Still not a bad price, though.

I looked on fleaBay, but didn't find it any cheaper, so it may be a fairly new lens.

    Sorry, Matt [:$]

    Hopefully it will now

If not, you'll find it at Warehouse Express, but don't confuse it with the Nikn 50mm F1.4, which costs twice as much (nice if you can afford it!)

Good primes are the way to go - F1.8 50mm should make for a lovely portrait lens :)
