I've actually got a very similar problem at the moment. My dipped beam is there but its not as bright as the sidelights.

are relays something which can go wrong?

ok, I think I've fixed mine now. well kinda.

when you normally change to full beam the dipped lights are turned right down to the brightness of the sidelights. I think my car was stuck on this decreased brightness.

I've just prodded my full beam lever aggresively and repetively, and my lights are working again.

I'm guessing the swtiches in the steering column are a bit dodgy.

When I get time I'll take it apart and clean all the connections.

    hope this helps

There isn't a relay in your headlights.

Assuming that you have checked the fuses, and bulbs, then my best guess is column switch. They are starting to die quite frequently now. Cost 30, takes an hour to change.
