I purchased a pair of cheap twin weber 40s complete with a one off inlet manifold. It is off a single seater, and the manifold was made slightly longer to increase torque.I've meausred the distance between the cylinder head and the bulk head as there doesn't seem like there is a lot of space. The distance is 270mm, but the carbs, complete with manifold and trumpets measure 310mm in length. Is it possible to cut away the sheet metal in the bulkhead where the carbs are and stick an airbox in there, with an inlet coming back into the engine bay. I don't really want to get another manifold and linkage because it costs too much, plus I'll lose out on some extra torque.

you can get very small trumpets, but i think it would be a good idea to draw air through the bulk head

maybe try and build a feed from the rain grill in the bonnet that feeds an air box in the scuttle area.
    :)

The mini lot do this, they get a box fabricated up which basically has
no lid and rivet/weld it into the bulkhead. A mate has taken an
alternate method to his 106 in order to gain space..........

Isn't that going to get wet or is there an airbox?

The trumpets are 60mm in length, the longer they are the more power you get, or so I've heard. I'd already planned on getting shorter trumpets, so if you want to swap then that sounds good to me. One does have a slight dent, but you can move it upside down so you can't see it. The picture of the pug engine is sort of what I had in mind, although I'd use an air box not the filters. Does anyone know how much room is behind the sheet metal of the bulk head, so I can get some dimensions for an airbox to be made up

ok...lets do a sw*p, i did speak to my local tuner about different trumpet lenghts and he said there inst really a rule of thumb. it will differ from each make of car due to manifold lenght and port size. he just told me to 'suck it and see'

PM your details luke, we'll get this sorted ASAP if you want

Exactly right, theres no rule to it, its dependant on alot more, cam
    profile etc etc

mmmm, not really as simple as that, diffarent lengths give you diffarent air speed/air volume...
meaning diffarent torque curves/peak brake horse and all sorts of other shit too.

I was just quoting what I've been told, I did't expect it to give massive power gains.
