How many Mk2 owners cars are untouched in that they have had no panel replacements or paint repairs??
In places, my EV has been badly oversprayed. I am gently removing the re-spary. I shall get back to the original paint, bumps, scratches, and all! It has to be original!
My daily mk2 looks to have never seen paint or panel replacement although it could definately do with some paintwork as its quite badly stonechipped. My joint resto mk2 project has had a replacement drivers door and paint on the same side and could also do with some paint on the back of it and its also getting a replacement bootlid. My mk2 parts car has had paint on the front and back as well as a replacement bonnet My dont really know what im going to with it mk2 has original panels and paint and it is mostly tornado red
Mine is totally original except for a replacement door. Its definitely the cleanest MK2 ive owned tbh. Some pics -
i'v not replaced any panel's but the paint could do with a really good touch up(eg full respray). and would swapping the 90 spec door's from my old 8v count as new panel's?
All of the golfs Iv ever owned seem to tell a story, both my late spec ones have had blow over resprays and my 85 Mk2 is like frankenstien!
both front wings and front passenger door and a rear arch otherwise original panels, has been painted down both side and again on the passenger side, needs the drivers side dooing but will have the back done first to save the boot lid and rear panel from the rust that is starting to form
Original panels and paint? erm no and no. I think the roof is original bar the paint otherwise the entire car is non original
Mines all original apart from a small patch on the bonnet which i had to do because of the nasty rust the rest all clean though
As far as I know, all original panels and paint apart from the bonnet which looks like the victim of a bad respray or a bad life somewhere. Bits of laquer peel which I'm slowly sorting.
Not mine, but then i don't really care about that any more-i'm happier to leave the cotton wool wrapping and cautious driving to those that do. I'd also bet half of those that think their cars are totally original are wrong-you'd never notice a replacement wing that was dealer fitted 20 years ago or one that had a new bumper from a minor parking scrape. Don't get me wrong, it would be lovely to have a genuinely original 16v/G60 syncro but i just don't think that i'd get as much pleasure from it once it was out of the garage.
my daily is all honest and original, but she does have some war wounds and they will be sorted with a paint job next year
I hate how folk get hung up on original panels / paint. Generally if its on original paint after 20+years it'll be pretty average to look at. A good repaspray with modern paint is much better and as long as all the panels are OEM quality, and fit perfectly then who cares if bits and pieces have been changed over the years.
Andy......a well looked after Mk2 is a well looked after Mk2 regardless of panel/paint age. I was merely intrigued as I saw an advert recently quoting 'original paint and panels' and wondered what people had.
