666 was pretty bad for those that recall it the other week.

    667 should be a tiddler!

As title, pop CD in <the POS laptop> and File Explorer notes there is a disc in, tries to read it, but times out and then starts buzzing, and suggesting I format the disc.

Thing is, it's done it with several discs this week.

I've had this before and it's software when the machine is fecked and needs yet another format to unscrew it from the state it gets in.

Exam Q: what software goes to pot that makes a DVD/CD drive not work?

No, I was being facetious, and not particularly helpful. Vista is just aweful.

There's no computer games on it.

I tried the control panel. Couldn't see anywhere to switch the DVD off & on, but checked the drivers were the latest ones avail and they are [:s]

Try to uninstall it and reinstall it. To do that go to device manager and choose "uninstall"
Then at the top click Action>Scan for hardware changes.
It should reinstall it. I doubt its the CD drive though. More the CD...
