mods sorry didnt know where to put this anyhow so bored tonight decided to try this , got one old piston stripped it all and put in a sealed bag with about 50ml of BBQ cleaner which cost 2.49 give it a shake after a bit, you will see the ally parts go mad after a few mins but this is a test, it could turn out disastrous piston was frothing like mad after a few mins and it clearly says on the cleaner do not use with aluminium oh well lets see, results to come lol
It'll be the caustic reacting with the ali can be a bit dangerous but should get super clean you sometimes do this to Ali to get it ready for anodising
Interesting - I look forward to seeing the result! It's good to learn what can be done (or should not be done) using cheap products and chemicals rather than buying expensive branded stuff.
thanks for your comments guys, trev i think you know how my mind ticks lol, anyhow some results, bit disappointing but not all bad totally killed the piston left it in way too long, seems to have eaten away at it so dipped another on in the solution for 10 mins this time and worked brilliantly, these are scrap pistons btw as you can see they have been abused in an earlier life i reakon i could have kept them dipped for another 10 mins to finish them however it worked brilliant on the con rods and other bits, they came up great, left before right one after i will be trying other parts too later but if you do try this please do it at your own risk ,these parts are scrap and it was only an experiment
