Yeah it's the top right as you look at the flange, 14mm spanner.

weird as the ecu sensor is pretty much next to it as is the oil temp, only leaves a wiring fault or dash problem. was it a GTI originally? if so try pulling out the 42/43 level warnign control relay above fusebox

Soooo, the plot thickens once more!!

STILL cant get it to idle right, no power to the isv. Earth is ok, idle micro switch has been changed as it was faulty. Across both pins on the isv connector (disconnected) i'm seeing 0.5v. Getting continuity with pin 27 in the ecu (white wire from isv) and the black wire to pin 38 (plus a few others). Fuse 15 is ok and has batt voltage. Really at a loss with this now :-(

you need to test between the black weire on the isv plug and ground, if you go across you either wont see anythign or a pulsed signal as the ecu pulses the -ve pin at varying speeds depending on how much idle air correction is needed

I know who you mean! Will try giving Tim a call, cheers!

According to autodata i should have ign live at pin 38 on the ecu(black n white) but i'm getting nothing. I wonder if this is the cause?

Sorry, must've posted at the same time! I've checked the black wire and the ground to it seems good, getting continuity to batt -ve and the engine block.

yeah pin 38 is joint to the isv ignition feed and should be fed from fuse 15 on the CE2 fusebox. this is fed from pin G2/4 which would have been black/white originally. where it is on yours depends where you have fed it from the CE1 fusebox. I use D/2 or D/7, but G spade 2 or 5 will also work. these are fed from fuses 17 and 18 so check them as well.

the same wire above also feeds the breather heater so if thats still on there check the wire from it, i normally chop that out as it doesnt do anything

sorry i meant put your multimeter between the black wire on the isv and a ground point to check for isv power :) the white wire on isv plug is a pulsed earth so you either wont see anything or odd readings

So, if I give pin 38 a fused feed it blows. If i disconnect the idle switch it doesn't. Maybe a short somewhere? I had to repair the length of wire above the manifold so i'm gonna try that now.

sounds like you have plugged the breather heater to the idle switch ;)

black and brown wire 2 pin plug is breather heater, originally it clips to a moulded plug on the plastic breather pipe. The idle switch is grey/yellow and brown/white

you can completely remove the breather heater plug as it does nothing. if you trace the wires the brown earths to head, the black taps into the isv power wire
