As above I have a v reg polo 1.9d and when the car is cold the little coil light comes on and goes off after a couple of seconds and starts no problem, but when the car is warm or been on a journey and you try and start it the little coil light doesn't come on and you have to wait for it to cool down before the coil light comes back on and allows you to start it again. Any help would be great.

what happens if you do try and start it when warm?

you don't always need the coil light to be on.

Get it to a garage with diagnostics first.

What engine? Sdi, Tdi or one of the early straight diesels? If its the early one the timing could be out on the injection pump.

this is baffaling as diesel needs heat to fire up.

but if the engine is warm it wouldn't require the glow plugs?

Exactly, if the engine is hot the light more than likely wont come on as it already has the heat in the engine

I would be more concerned if the light didnt come on when cold

You need to get the fault codes read as a first port of call

Some more info on the car and the problem may help with a better answer as well

Does is just turn over etc or does nothing happen at all?

    Hi

The car is a standard diesel no injection. When the car is warm the coil light doesn't come on and just turns over and won't start can take 10 mins sometimes to get the thing going.

The `coil light` coming on is an indication that the glow plugs are coming on to warm the bores, prior to starting.

Whilst they are on, you may not be able start it. This is perfectly normal...

With a diesel, you should really be waiting till this light goes out before starting anyway.

Of course, once it`s warm, the glow plugs aren`t required, so you can start straight away.

Can`t think why this isn`t the case with yours...

As said, get the codes read first.

come across this problem a few time s , starts on the button when cold, then won,t start once hot, also some time starts ok on a bump . my opinion is low engine compression , worn engine , . piston rings gummed and coked up.

I have a polo doing the same thing, its a 99 1.9d non sdi.

It starts perfectly when cold, which to me would rule out compression issues.

It normally drives great but the odd time it may give the odd stutter or hold back just for a split second.

The car only has 87k on it and is well serviced.

Really annoying, takes forever to start sometimes.

Has to be fuel related if you ask me.

Has anyone sorted this problem yet?

Also seems to idle a bit high, just over 1k, surely should be down around 900?
