A colleague is looking to buy a 95/96 Polo, what sort of thing are likely to go wrong on them & what should you look out for when viewing one.

It will probably be a 1.4 engine if that makes a difference.

    Thanks

gearbox can be weak on the polos make sure it's not making ant strange noise

and make sure the cat has not been damaged
rust on the tailgate lock sills and rear archs but they are not bad for rot if looked after

the water pump runs of the cam belt try and find out if it has been changed or if the cam belt was do did they do the pump at the same time

    1.4 8v or 16v? 16v's get rated highly 100bhp so fairly nippy

handling wont set the world alight and watch out for rust

arches and sills i think are the worst places, best bet is to look on club polo in the FAQ section

engines have weird temperments, my mate had one that cut out a lot whilst driving.

not sure what it was but it doesn't do it any more, or much

On the plus side, if you can call it that, my mates wife hit a Rover that pulled out in front of her Polo when she was going about 60mph. Practically took the front off the Rover. The Polo was written off but she and her two young sons were fine. So much so she got out and tried to pull the old woman out the Rover to kill her! LOL!!! Luckily the guy behind her stopped and calmed her down. Hers was an S reg 1.0lt powerhouse!!!

If the rear arches look ok have a feel on the inside lip as they rust from the inside edge outwards.
