My girlfriends polo has started playing up within the last week or so. It is hard to find a gear, particularly 1 and 2. It does go in but with a crunch. Stationary it all feels fine, but even at v low revs and a careful 1-2 change still makes a crunch. There is a slight noise (not really a whine) in 1st gear if you let off the accelerator, but disappears when you step on the gas again. Maybe a bearing on the way out? Also, the clutch is very stiff but I assume that's cos it's cable clutch? I know the 'boxes are weak on 6n/6n2s but is it possible it's gear linkage rather than a shot 'box & the noise is something else. What's the next step towards dignosis?
