I have been sat reading about loads of different lenses this afternoon with regards to portrait lenses. What do you all use and why?

I tend to use my 50mm 1.8 mkII quite a lot. I'm not a massive fan of the conventional posed portrait and like something a little different and contemporary

Me either, and I`ve found my 18-55 prime lens plenty good enough, especially just off the cuff stuff.

I dont have a portrait lens.. but if i were to get one i would look at the following.

    85mm L
    135mm L
    or a 70-200 2.8 any varient

I use my Nikon AF-S 50mm F1.4, it isolates the subject from the background, by making the backgroud cream away in a pleasant, but non-attention grabbing blur. It's hard to describe in words, but the difference between the F1.4 shots and kit lens shots is night and day for quality portraits.

I have a deposit on a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG macro lens.
I read the review in Practical Photography last year and was blown away with its versatility.
Not cheap at around 500 but a great all rounder.

Yeah.. 105macro.. i had overlooked that!

TBH... if you are getting a 70-200 2.8 you might just want to try that out for portraits before buying another lens. Ive seen a ton of amazing portraits with this lens

I couldn't afford the F1.4, but have the Nikon F1.8 50mm lens and it's a great portrait lens. I also have the F1.8 35mm, which being a bit wider, is handy when doing group/portrait shots. In fact, as I don't tend to do landscape type shots, either the 35mm or 50mm stays on the camera 95% of the time.

I have had a good look around the net and found nothing relating to PP's review, If any of you are interested, I can scan the mag and upload it.

I of course meant `kit` lens... [><]

I had `prime` in my head because I`d just been pricing up a Canon f1.8 50mm MkII.
