Would this problem make engine sound rough knocking etc

150 models can suffer from camshaft/follower failure, that could cause knocking etc.

Loads of white smoke is usually an injector issue. The injector is weeping fuel or not closing properly. You may be able to identify which one by looking at the injector balance in VAG-COM measuring blocks. This can cause dilution of the oil as the excess diesel can find it's way into the sump.
Could also be lack of compression on a cylinder.
Diesel that makes it into the exhaust just vaporizes into the white smoke you see. I am assuming it's not loosing coolant.
This is a video of a 3.0 TDI with injector issues. The injectors weep fuel into the cylinder.
