im getting a big puff of blue smoke from my 92 8v gti on starting the car it has a perfect amount of oil in it, i have heard it could be the valve stem seals, any other ideas it could be before i yank the head off?

valve stem seals.... its nothing to worry about, if its only a tiny amount I would leave it as the extra oil will be lubing up the valve as these are a quite soft metal and start to wear after 100k or so

Yep they sure block up solid and I think the only option would be to remove the gauze/ replace.
