    hi,

does anyone know if its possible to tell if a gearbox has an ATB/LSD fitted without opening the box up to take a look?

if i jack up the front wheels and spin one of them will the other wheel spin differently to a car without one fitted.

or can you tell by just driving the car around normally on the road, would the steering feel heavy or not center when you let go of the wheel?

    thanks

    steve

yes its fitted to a car,

bought a car today, and believe it has one fitted but have no paper work to back it up so need to find out how to tell.

i didn't buy the car on the strength of it having an atb fitted, was only told it had one fitted when i arrived to look at the car. it'll just be an added bonus if one is fitted, as it already has a 6 speed conversion [:D] [:D]

    what car is it?

should be able to feel the car being tugged this way and that if you accelarate on a 'patched up' road.

    mk2 2.0l 16v.

need to get tax and propper ins before i can take it out on the road for test to see if i can feel any difference from my other golfs. drove it home today on my 'drive any car' HIC ins and only has one days tax left. steering felt heavy but this could be a pas problem as it was very wet and the belt squeeked....

If you lift both front wheels and turn one.if the other wheel turns in the opposite direction you have a conventional diff, if the other wheel turns in the same direction you have an LSD.....or so i was told

Its been along time but I'm pretty sure the quaife atb in the escort axle I've got doesn't do that, the wheels go in opposite directions. From what I understand atb's don't work in quite the same way as lsd's.

If you can't tell whether it's fitted or not then it either hasn't got one or you drive like a big girl.

Find a round about and go round it in second gear and floor it. if it understeers it hasn't got one. if the car feels like it's glued to the road and is magnetically attracted to the roundabout and you go [:D] then it has got one.

They make a massive difference on a FWD car, push the car to it's limits and you'll soon see.

Oh, and if you can't drive just jack the car up and turn the wheels, they'll be quite stiff and should turn the same way.

    cheers for the replys,

car no longer has no tax or ins so can't take it out for a test, i drove it home very carefully in the rain on sat so didn't get a chance to boot it on a roundabout.

jacked it up today and span the wheels in 6th ;) they span in opposite directions, and if one was held then it wasn't possible to spin the other.

i took the pass side wheel off and the end of the box looked like this:

i was told a mk3 cable change box was fitted with a 6speed conversion, anyone know if the motorsport labeled end casing is part of his conversion, or could it be a genuine motorsport box?

    thanks

    thanks

thought it could of been the gemini conversion

i didn't hear any whine from the box, but the test drive and the drive home were in heavy rain so that may have masked any noise,

when running it yesturday in the garden there was a slight noise comming from the box that stopped when the clutch was pressed down, next job is to drain the oil and refill, any recomendation on oil type/make.

when you say major money how much do you mean?

it's in a 2l 16v that i picked up for trackday use out of the trader for very little money, (even cheaper now i know whats fitted to it [:D] )

The noise will be the clutch release bearing.

    Use Redline MT-90 synthetic oil.

By major, I mean 1366+vat for the 6 speed kit....in parts alone....

    You lucky b4stard!

    cheers

1366 is more than i paid for the car  :lol:is the kit still available then?

i'll get some of that redline oil, (demon tweeks?, halfords?)

guess theres not much i can do about the clutch release bearing until the clutch wears out?

going back to the original Q' i guess theres no ATB fitted if the wheels spin in opposite directions and won't spin if one is held?

    thanks

You have found a RIGHT baragain there!!!

Gemini went out of business. I have the catalogue with all the part numbers and prices for all the bits. I think they were bought out by Ricardo Motorsport of someone like that.

Speak to Vince Saiya at Stealth Racing if you need to know any more about it.

The other wheel should spin when you hold one if it's got an open diff.

You can't really test a Quaife with the wheels off the floor I've just found out as it won't do much if one wheel is off the ground. You'll have to drive it.

just spoke to stealth, their sticker's on the slam panel and the guy i bought the car from said they did the engine conversion.

vince remembers doing the car a good few years ago, the engine was rebuilt with a flowed head and schrick cams and they converted the box but didn't install a diff, but one could have been install since, i'll only find out when i get it back on the road.

phatvr6, any chance of getting a photo copy of the parts catalogue?

acf8181, don't hate me, i 've been looking for the right car to come along to replace my old mk1 track car for a long time now, just got very lucky....

    thanks
