Hi there all, bought a tdi 115 a few weeks ago which actually turned out to be a 130! Wahey!

Can anyone please recommend the oil grade that is suitable for this car.

I know it has to be fully synthetic and preferably long life, however, have seen many different opinions about what grade it has to be?

    05w40?

    05w30?

    10w30?

I know there are brands who are PD approved..ie castrol edge 05w40 for PD engines, but is a little pricey.

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks

;)0-30 or 5-30 (current & old spec) problem with running wrong oil is they do have issues with wearing out camshaft lobes

TBH the dealers 'Platinum' oil is cheaper than the castrol equivalent, and its the same oil

Dealer everytime for me, I renently bought for my 130 golf a full service kit including two aero blade wipers for 70 ish all in. That was oil and filter, sump washer and drain plug, air filter, fuel filter, and pollen filter.

yep this has replaced the old PD oil, nice and cheap from the dealers, do not skimp on the oil in a PD as it will show later on... factory oil and 10k services from day one and the are good for 250k easy! and they will be still oil tight then too (my old one at 190k would use less than 1/4 of the dip stick in 10k miles!)

i have the stuff in my mk3 and s4. ive used a lot of oils but have never used an oil where there was such a marked reduction in oil temp, in ALL conditions. gotta be something special about it

It must be the correct spec (505.01) for PD engines on short life which is nice and cheap from VW and should be a 5W-40

Synta Platinum is the cheapest stuff for a short life regime - 15 from TPS for 5 litres

I've used this (and the older PD oil it replaced) since new - change it every 5k miles

At 15 for the oil, 3.05 for the filter and 1 for a new sump plug an oil change is costing me less than 20.

My engine used a bit up to 50k miles (1 ltr every 10k roughly) then stopped as expected, it's now done ove 100k and doesn't use a drop.

my 1.8T has just gone on to this, before it was on the semi 10-40 that vw do and I must admit that my oil temps have dropped... crusing at 70 its now only 80deg, where as before it was 90 (and the oil wasnt old either! only been in for about 2k)

I always use the gen vag oil though as its soo cheap!!!

What about a 26 castrol oil and filter change at National Tyres? Any good, wouldn't mind sending my missus there today for an oil change before we go to ireland.

I put the number plate in and it came up with 2 options:

    OCEDGE1 Castrol Edge 5W30 Full Synthetic 31.50
    OCMAG1 Castrol Magnatec 10W40 Semi Synthetic 26.10

Mines an AUY 115bhp with 127,000 miles.

not bad for the sake of convenience but for twice the cost you could get enough oil for at least four, maybe five oil changes if you bought the pukka platinum stuff from VW haha

I got it done, once they had got the right filter.

It doesn't seem to smoke as much on start up and runs right enough.
