    Probably something I should know really with all the electrical medaling I do but what do the numbers that VW stamp on their relays relate to? What can I cross referance them to?

    19 was a wiper relay, 99 was a variable wiper relay (like on the mk3's where you pull the stalk down and back up and down to set the time delay) Thats as far as my knowledge goes!

    I have no idea what numbering system they use, 100 is a normal power relay switch

    strange thing is wiring diagrams refer to the location in the relay carrier (stamped on board), they also refer in the wiring diagrams using J numbers

    all simple, when you need a relay you have to check the relay location, get the number that your refering to know which you need, find on etka the relay plate and wing it from there[:s] :(

    it's a daft & hard to work with

    Might have to start with a list then! Noticed some are here in the electrical faq section from rubjonny, cheers:)

    1 = Carb inlet manifold heater relay
    2 = Fuel pump relay (MK1 & Early MK2/Rocco K-Jet)
    5 = Shift light and MPG gauge
    15 = radiator fan
    17 = x-over relay, 40amp?
    18 = x-over relay
    19 = front wiper intermittant relay
    20 = rear wiper non-intermittant relay (when you push the stalk forward, it'll only wipe once, no intermittant!)
    21 = hazard/indicator relay
    30 = MK3 (GTI 8v or 16v?) ECU relay
    32 = MK2 digifant ECU relay
    36 = seatbelt warning relay (possibly headlight warning too?)
    53 = misc equipment ignition switched relay (horn, fogs, leccy windows etc)
    67 = MK2 16v/ MK3 VR6 fuel pump relay
    72 = rear wiper intermittant relay
    74 = carb decelleration cut-off
    80 = MK2 digifant fuel pump relay
    99 = front wiper variable intermittant relay
    109= VR6 ECU relay
    133= aircon relay
    167= MK3 & MK2 16v fuel pump relay

    Anyone know for sure what relay number for a mk1 fuel pump?

    Which relay controls the rear screen demister?

    Golf year 2000. 1.9 litre S TDI. Rear screen demister not working.

    The fuse (number 26) to the rear-screen demister is OK, and I have removed the trim under the steering column to expose the relays. Now, if only I could decipher which relay controls the rear screen demister, I could check its integrity.

    I realise that the circuit pasted onto the rear screen may be broken, but would like to eliminate other easier causes first. After the relay is checked, next stop is removing the trim on the hatchback door, and checking if the power is reaching there.

    Can anyone tell me the number code for the screen demister relay? Or if I'm barking up the wrong tree? Or just barking ...

    there isnt a relay for the screen heater on its own, rather it is fed from the X-over relay '100' on the MK4. this relay also does the blower motor, rear wiper, front wiper and headlights so if those work this relay is fine.

    to start with make sure you have 12v at the white wire from the switch, if you do check for 12v at the white wire in the 5 pin plug on the left C pillar area. if thats ok check for 12v at the screen heater plug, and if THAT checks out it can only be the screen or earth :)

    John,

    Thank you so much for your response. As the blower motor, rear wiper &c are fine, I can now forego fiddling with relays, with the possibility of breaking something else in the process!

    I will check the wiring voltages in those wires. Could you please enlighten me about what is a 'left C pillar'? Perhaps I'll find out when I follow the wiring from the switch, but a steer would be nice.

    Clive.

    this is all the description you get in the wiring diagrams, on a mk2 golf it woudl be behind the boot side carpet near the rear light so i would start there. the wire has tyo run down from the tailgate to a plug which then joins the main car loom somewhere back there so hopefully it shouldnt be too hard to find :)

    John,

    Success! After removing the plastic trims on the rear hatchback door, there were 12 volts both sides of the window connections, and each strand of the demister wires was sound. As you said, it was the earth. Within the rubber protective boot on the RHS of the door hinge, the big earth was completely severed, and had tried to weld itself to the insulating coatings of the other wires. It obviously happened years ago.

    It may be rather pathetic to feel excited just seeing your rear windscreen demisted, but I do! Many thanks for your advice.

    Clive.
