Hi all would like to get some options on how much it would cost for a refurb.

I have a mk2 golf gti that I’m stripping down to a shell which I plan to send off for blasting, welding and paint but want to get an idea of a reasonable ball park figure to approach a body/resto shop with. Bare shell with several areas of concern for welding, media blast and full respray what would people say cost wise? I’d want decent quality workmanship as I plan on keeping the car

I can see past posts about resto costs but would be nice to get a modern day price I’m in West Midlands if anyone has any recommendations of some places to approach

Depends to what extent work is needed, but I wouldn't expect much change from 10k. I got quoted 3k by a specialist vw resto place this year for welding alone on a mk2. Friend had a pretty extensive resto on his mk1 cab and it was 5 figures.

I would agree with Richard. From the work you describe it’s got to be 10k.

My thinking was around 3k for paint, 3k for welding and 1k for blasting. Im hoping to do all the prep work myself to save in costs where possible

3k might be optimistic for the paint, you could get it for that but you defo get what you pay for. The guy on volkswizard paid 3.5k for his corrado painting and I'm sure that discounted for trade/plug on his YouTube channel

I (when I say "I" I mean my very talented brother) did all the welding on my Mk2 and it was well gone in all the usual places. Stripped and ready shell delivered to paintshop. They bare metalled the thing and then gave it back with a lovely job done. It was 6k. A full resto including welding would be 10k plus in the south of England where i live. I was getting quotes from some places at 15k.......

It depends on the quality of work you want. Top notch welding, it’s expensive.

Good paint? We painted a Mk2 recently, 4.5k for paint.

I suppose it’s most people’s idea if a resto, I don’t want a cheap job as I plan to keep the car but on the other hand im not interested in a show winning quality restoration (although that would be nice!)

Most people don’t understand the cost involved when undertaking a project.

Depends if you’re stripping the car yourself too

Wow! £4.5k just for the paint, surely gold plating would have been cheaper. Seriously though, was that for 10l, i.e. £450 per litre?. I had no idea that was possible. Why so expensive?

Only peeps who do understand are the ones who’ve done their own resto so understand how much time it takes to do it properly with no short cuts. And all that much time costs much money.
