    all,
my 1.6 driver with 180K on the clock has started rumbling at over 40 mph, also there's a clonking on slow turns. there does not seem to be any fault that fits this description in the haynes manual. any ideas? i'm thinking cv joints, but it does not fit the haynes description of excesive play on acceleration and decceleration!
    thanks in advance Mark

Have a look in the FAQ section, there are posts about how to tell if its CV or bearings that need replacing

test for cv is to put it full lock and then drive forward and back again without using brakes ie using the engine to change direction

    listen for horrible sounds[:s]

rumbling could be bearings or cvs or some thing else???

from experience with mine the wheel bearings made a whiring noise and when doing slow turns it was the wishbone and bushes that were shot hence the noise. replacing them solved my clunking anyway.
