    Finally bought one....

Needs an oil service though, so I was thinking of getting a genuine filter and some oil for it....
Previous ppwk shows its had Castrol GTX ?..

Is that the best oil for it and how often does it need new plugs ?

Also is the engine undertray easy to remove from the ground for an oil change ?

where is the oil filter, I just bought one today and its not like the mk2/mk3 metal ones, its an air filter type looking thing ?

    Right, lets make this easier!.....

Firstly, there is no best oil. You're sposed to use a vw recommended quality oil. As far as im concerned, any reasonable semi will be more than adequate.

how often does it need new plugs ?
    Diesels dont have spark plugs

Also is the engine undertray easy to remove from the ground for an oil change ?
The undertray is near impossible to remove from flat - once in the air, you can get at it by undoing the 4 or 5 fastners

where is the oil filter, I just bought one today and its not like the mk2/mk3 metal ones, its an air filter type looking thing ?
The oil filter is a cartridge type, it goes in the housing thats at the front of the engine.

torx 25 needed, 19mm spanner for the sump plug, a small flat blade screw driver so you can pull the seal of the filter cap and an oil filter tool to remove the plastic oil filter cap, warm the engine up fpr 15 mins, then drop the oil and filter, when you undo the filter let it drain off for 5 mins so you dont drop oil everywhere when you take it out of its housing, replace the seal and the filter element, replace the sump plug and tighten up, refit the under tray and fill up engine with oil, when you buy the filter from vw get some vw syntra PD oil, gray bottle with red label. if mem servers me right i think its about 3.8 litres to max but top in up to 3.5 and check and sill as ness

    hope this helps

turn the ign off, press and hold the right trip reset button, turn the ign on, the service light will come on, let go of the reset button and then turn the the left button(time adjustment) to the right, the service light will go off and let go of the button, turn the ign off and back on and see if the service indicator comes on, if so try again but it should work first time

the oil filter cartridge is under the plastic engine cover. The cover is held down by 3 or 4 10mm nuts. The nuts are hidden under circular plastic caps about 2mm in diameter.
