I picked up an Octavia Tdi tonight - 2003 or 2004 I think, 75k miles. It feels dead, no turbo shove at all, so I presume the MAF will be dead - sound reasonable? Also, the glow plug light on the dash flashes while you're driving - is this instead of having a "check engine" light, is it likely to be due to the dead MAF? Glow plugs seem fine, it starts on the button.

glow plug light will indicate an engine fault - could well be the MAF but best to read codes and go from there.
