Just got a new computer and the on-board LAN is not up to much, compared to my old comp, old comp was 10x faster here's the specs: OLD computer: ASuS M4N68T-M LE V2 motherboard with o/b Gbit LAN AMD Athlon II X2 255 processor Crucial 4G RAM WD 1 T HD LAN speed 12548.7 KByte/sec NEW computer: ASUS P7H55E motherboard with o/b Gbit LAN Intel i3 540 processor Crucial 4G RAM (same as above) WD 1 T HD (same as above) LAN speed 869.2 KByte/sec !!! Any ideas????????????????? Done so far: LOADS, including: LAN Cable = same as old comp, but next to router with short cat5e cable makes no speed difference... on board LAN driver loaded (many tried Realtek and MS) Modem reset (changed too) Win 7 64 and 32 tried no Windows errors, messages, etc
What ethernet adapter is fitted? cos if your old one was better specced that'd be the obvious answer.
Both ASUS motherboards have Gbit LAN onboard. The old fast computer has nVidia, the new slow one has Realtek.
try new lan card drivers to start with, and check for bios updates. look in the adaptor settings then view its status to see what lan speed it is connected at. click lan icon in tray -> open network and sharing centre -> click change adaptor settings -> double click lan adaptor icon
Can also try changing the negotiation speed to either 1gb full duplex or 100mb full duplex (it'll probably be on Auto Negotiate).
try remving ipv6 from the protocols on your adapter. also remove RDC and disable Autotuning (plenty of how to's on the net) if you have any wireless or virtual adapters, disable them to see if that helps. if after all of this and the other suggestions it does not improve let me know. did you install the chipset drivers first before any of the others?
100mbps is good if you have a 100mbps network adaptor and switch/router, if you have a 1000 adaptor and switch/router then its not so good it will only show 1000 if the devices at both ends are if you know what i mean. not liek 100 is slow though, especially if its only connected to the internet!
At the risk of asking the simple questions: Are you measuring the speed in exactly the same way? And how?
Yes, by using the above link, clicking on "start de geselecteede tests", may not work in the UK, but i'm sure there's an equivalent.
I think it's a hardware problem in the PC. If i run Linux from a bootable disk it's no faster. So in principle it's not a Windows problem. There must be a bottleneck in the hardware. The PC has on-processor graphics (Intel GMA HD) so the graphics goes over the same bus as the CPU data. Howveer, fitting a PCI graphics card and shutting down the on-board graphics doesn't help either.
OK, so the basic question i have is: Why is one computer with Gb LAN 15x quicker than another computer with Gb LAN when connected to the same cable? At the end of the day internet download speed is what i need, the other numbers/specs are not important to me.
