Hey guys. I have more questions. I was fitting a new aeriel, and after a couple of other things happened, it turns out I had to thread the lead in by feel instead of string. Anyway. Couldn't find a way through, no way. Also, I couldn't remove glove box. when I bought the car, I remember the guy saying he'd done the heater matrix, and seem to remember that's a dash out job. 1: So, given the above, is it safe to assume that upon reassembly, he's made a dogs dinner of reassembly and I'm going to have to redo the dash myself? 2: I had a wobbly seat. I bought a wobbly seat clip replacement kit from ebay (non OE). Seat is still wobbly. Could these cheap clips be undersize as I still have movement in seat rail tunnel? 3: Carpets. Given the handbrake cover is different on later Mk2s, and my '87 doesn't have the screw tab for the later covers, my question is, is the rear carpet different due to different handbrake caper? Thanks in advance chaps
1, if you remove the passenger undertray and look up above where the carpet ends (near the heater ducts from memory) you can see where the cable feeds in. No need to take glovebox out 2, the ebay ones are shite. I had same problem and binned the lot for the same reason as you, luckily I had a few spare OE ones that I could use
1. matrix is doable without pulling the dash in a mk2, the issue you have is there are 2 holes for the aerial one in the scuttle and another in the reinfocement panel which makes it really awkward and theres not much clearance thanks to the glovebox as you found out 2. even the genuine ones will still have a little wobble, but better than many of the cheap pattern garbage 3. yes, pre-87 carpet has a much smaller hole since the handbrake trim is clipped to the lever. post-88 the trim fits to the floor and the hole in the carpet is much larger. early carpets fit late, late carpets look ugly on an early car unless you fab something to cover the hole
Cheers guys. 1: I remember doing aerials in the early 2000s, and it always went through the scuttle. I think the previous owner has ballsed it up when he did the matrix, in my opinion. I like having the radio on. My carpet has been cut to shart, so that bit is hard to judge, but there is a visible hole going into engine bay, I'll post the photo later. It has no grommet either. 2: Any links/recommendations to decent ones? 3: As I suspected then. I can't be doing with fabbing carpet. So that answers that one, lol
Is this the hole you're on about Richard? Right of the middle in 1st pic, there's no grommet. And from the inside from where I think you're on about: EDIT, sorry, I had no idea the photo was that bad until I posted it.
I'm pretty sure it goes in higher up, under the rain tray from memory. Or maybe not, I'll have a look next time I'm in the garage
yep the aerial goes through a hole at the back of the scuttle area, then it has to feed through the reinforcement panel on the inside and out of another hole before feeding to the radio. the problem is you're trying to feed it through blind, plus there will be insulation carpet over the top of the hole and god knows what inside the reinforcement you might find it easier to tape the aerial wire to something stiff like a thin long socket extension so you can shove it through then grab on the inside and feed back in.
Cheers. I thought it went through there, It's where I thought they went when I did them in my youth. I have poking a scriber through to try to find the hole but couldn't. I'm sure I used to reach up from behind glovebox and guide it through from there once through the back of the scuttle. That's why I think someone's made a pigs ear of putting the dashboard back together.
OK, regarding #2. What are the best seat runner clips? If OE are the best, are they used on any other vehicles? However, what are the 2nd best?
