Whilst changing the speedo cable on my mk2 16v the drive gear dropped down into the gearbox as the cable was snapped on the end. It dropped right in to the gearbox and I can't see it or feel it.

Is there any other way of retrieving the drive other than removing the gearbox and fishing it out then? Also, what would happen if I were to drive the car in its current state, I'm guessing the drive gear will do its best to chew my gearbox?
