    Well.....

Back when GVK and Tubs (forum members) both ran 180bhp 2.0 16v's, Ian B managed to get his TSR built 2.0 16v to make a genuine 201bhp. No matter what GVK did, he didn't manage the same output. In the end, it was put down to a special "thing" that TSR fitted to make the last bit of power. Of course the "thing" doesn't really exist but it has been a running joke since.

except that it was (sadly) never measured at the same time as the rest of us.......so doubt always lingered as to whether it was any more pokey than the others of similar spec

thus, the fabled 'thing' may, or may not, have had a basis

(easy 5-10hp variability on valver power on rollers from day to day)

My understanding from PMs with Ian B at the time (was a long time ago so the memory is vague) is that 'The Thing' is actually anti-matter ... The removal of material to increase the compression ratio, to be more exact.

this would be removal of material from the 'stock' 9A bottom end would it......

I went on track in the car with a thing, a spring, a ding-a-ling....

    Was a great laugh.

So - these were done at different times but on the same (Stealth) RR and with similar spec motors ?

Actually Rob not quite true. Myself and Graham from TSR with his white valver attended a RR day at Stealth Club GTI GVK was there too and we all went on the rollers for like for like comparisons myself and Graham again got similar outputs of just over 200bhp although Graham's cam spec was slightly different.

The graphs were measured at Stealth but were fairly consistent at other RR's.

Thing is you'll have to speak to Graham on what was done but in the end my car and Gary's were not identical in spec.

They were the good years and hopefully CFJ will be coming home soon.

You can't beat good old 16v trackday fun on a budget.

Gary's car used to vary in power loads from event to event, he even joked at some point that his car had picked up something like 15hp over various events with no changes at all......so your 'just over 200hp' could be infact 'just over 190'

at the main day we all went that unfortunately you missed, (13/4/2004) '200hp' cars were making 189-191 whereas my '200hp' car made 199.4.

    whatever, the game's moved on

I suprised there is no comment from you about the potentially modified nature of your 'stock' 9A bottom end......a hike in CR would go a long way to explain a few things ;)
